Overview
The Summer Learning Journey is a hands-on, community-based residential gathering at the Corrymeela Community's centre in Ballycastle, on the North Antrim coast of Northern Ireland. It is held by the Understanding Conflict Trust. Participants come as an intergenerational group from educational, civil-society, and organizational partners in Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa, South Korea, and elsewhere.
San Antonio's place in that gathering is the Nurturing Hope fellowship. Students, faculty, staff, and community partners from Rotary and the H.E. Butt Foundation travel with participants from other countries. The journey extends the local year; it is not the local program.
The week draws on the Nurturing Hope materials, but the Trust's own framing is that the main resource is the people in the room: their stories, questions, failures, and successes. Sessions have included joint presentations by North Koreans and South Koreans, and visits in Belfast with former combatants who now work together.
How it relates to Seeds of Hope
Seeds of Hope is a year-long academy in Northern Ireland for young adults. Some Seeds of Hope participants and alumni take part in the Learning Journey. The two programs share Corrymeela and Rotary relationships. They are distinct fromNurturing Hope San Antonio.
Taking part
Places on the Learning Journey are by invitation of the Understanding Conflict Trust. San Antonio students are typically considered through their campus fellowship. For the Trust’s own description, see nurturinghope.net.
